You can recognize me by the beard on my snout, which is how I got my name. I use my long, strong snout to dig through the soil and rotting fallen trees for my favorite snacks like roots, shoots, fungi, earthworms, and insects. I also munch on fruit, seeds, eggs, and carrion. Oil-rich seeds are a particularly important part of my diet. When food is abundant, we tend to hang out in groups. However, when food is harder to find, we split up and I sometimes follow monkeys to eat the fruit they drop from up in the trees. Aren’t I a clever pig?
I mostly hang out in lowland rainforests and peat swamp forests. You can come visit me in Bako National Park, Sarawak. You might catch a glimpse of me in Taman Negara National Park, though there aren’t as many of us there as before. If you do see me, be sure to keep a safe distance.
You can see me in my natural habitat in this video.
